OUR DECK RESTORATION PROCESS:
Our deck restoration process is simple, safe and effective to make sure your deck is in the best of hands and looks its best when we finish with the final deck staining. We will always check in with you throughout our deck restoration process and discuss any issues or concerns we may have with your deck. We believe that our customers should be involved as much as possible in the deck restoration process to assure they're happy and content with the process at every step. The following is our total restoration process from beginning strip/clean to the final staining of your deck.
1) Deck Cleaning/Rinsing
The first step of your deck restoration project is to clean and or rinse your deck to get and loose particles off that will inhibit the stain stripping process. This is done with a pressure tip on a hose. We NEVER use a pressure washer on a wood deck! Please see our FAQ page for an explanation of why we do not pressure wash a wooden deck. If a deck cleaner is needed to prep your deck to strip we will use it at this step. This is important in the deck staining process.
2) Deck Stripping/Conditioning
After your deck is prepped with the cleaning/rinsing process we then proceed with the stain stripping, Our liquid application is applied using a paint roller. We then allow the stain stripper to take effect for about 15 minutes to assure the stain stripping application has had to time to take effect properly. We then use a deck cleaning brush composed of plastic bristols to scrub the loose stain off of your deck. After this is finished we then rinse the old stain and stain stripper off of your deck. Keep in mind that cleanup will be performed at the end of the deck restoration process. When the deck is stripped we then apply a liquid deck conditioner/brightener. This adds important natural chemicals needed for the health of your deck back into the wood and restores it to a newer look again. If this is not done prior to your deck staining the final outcome may be less than exceptional.
3) Necessary Drying Period
The next step in the deck restoration process is the easiest. We need to let the deck dry overnight before applying the stain. Stain usually seeps into your deck's wood approximately 1/8 of an inch. This means that the wood of your deck must be dry at least 1/8 of an inch before applying the deck stain otherwise proper application of the stain has not been accomplished and the stain will begin to peal away from your deck usually within the first 6 months. A more immediate effect to your deck when stained too soon is more apparent right away. If water and stain come in contact with each other the stain, once dried on the deck, will look splotchy.
4) Staining/Sealing/Painting
Staining, sealing or painting your deck is the most important step in the deck restoration process naturally. But there are many things that can go wrong with the process if proper preparations are not taken. Before we begin to stain your deck we cover anything that can be permanently damaged by stain. This includes -- but is not limited to -- covering all surrounding shrubs, flowers, trees and siding to protect it from over-staining. When this is completed and inspected for total coverage we then move to the deck staining process. We lay the stain of your choice to your deck boards with a specialized tool used just for this purpose. This assures a proper and flawless laying of the stain on your deck. We try when possible to get between the boards too just for protection purposes. We then ask that you stay off of your deck for at least 12 hours to allow proper drying and curing of the stain to the deck. After that you can just simply enjoy the new beauty of your freshly restored deck.
